Northern Shovelers

Pennsylvania

On a cold March morning, these Northern Shoveler drakes would fight for a while, then take a break. This was repeated many times throughout the morning. The fascinating part was their technique. Rather than challenging the opponent face-to-face (or rather bill-to-bill), they would chase each other in a tight circle. The objective seemed to be to grab the opponents foot, which this photograph clearly shows.
